African pizza safari!

Pizza squire Benjamin and I traveled to Uganda and Senegal and did our best to taste the local cuisine (which we did and really enjoyed) however there were often times that there were only western food options and thus I decided to see how Ugandans do pizza.  Short answer is unsurprisingly not very good...  But considering Senegal had a few pizza places and didn't have pizza available, Uganda won the competition by default.
Traditional Ugandan pizza. So as mentioned, I did not experience good African pizza.  The hotel was pretty fancy and was good in most respects - we even had high tea one day which was pretty good.  The pizza somehow took 45 minutes and tasted like a frozen pizza that had been reheated and flown over from Canada or the U.S.  Still fun to be eating pizza but not very good.

This place really wasn't any better.  Although there were lots of toppings, this pizza was almost certainly a frozen pizza reheated or at least all the toppings were frozen at one point (which is surprising as electricity wasn't that consistent - although it could explain why it tasted like it had been refrozen several times...) Nice people and an interesting place but I much preferred Ugandan food - which I loved.

Pretty good but as all the olives were small and had pits in them and the crust was brittle it was a bit of a challenge. It was very much a salad on a crusty pita bread which again doesn't work.  It needs to be more doughy for the greens and other items to work properly.  Still good in its parts but all together was not a great experience.  Eating all the olives also took forever and many of them ended up on the ground as they rolled off the table or piece of pizza.

This place advertised several different calzones and I thought that I should give them a try again.  I prefer all my food to be in burrito type format that I can eat with my hands so the idea really appeals to me.  I just don't think it works well with a wood stove as the insides don't get cooked properly so you get some that inevitably gets overcooked and some that isn't cooked enough.  I gave it another go and although it was much better than other calzones I've had in Rome, it was still disappointing.  I'll have to go back again and try the pizza to give it a more thorough review as the other pizzas did look good and it is in Monti so it gets extra points.

Although this place is located just off Cavour at the end closest to Fiori Imperiali (Colosseum and others), it is tucked away down an alleyway.  It is surprisingly large as there are multiple rooms but there were still many people waiting to sit on a Friday night.  The location is pretty perfect if you sit outside - inside is pretty normal.  It is a little hectic but that may have been because it was a Friday night.  They also get a mention for a charity pizza that they have which tasted good and 1 euro goes to a charity.  So one more reason to eat pizza there!
Alle Carrette, Via della Madonna dei Monti 95.
Four cheese pizza. It was a good pizza without anything specifically wrong. It just didn't taste very special - good, and better than average but not great.  I would still go back though as it didn't disappoint and the location is great.

Bir and Fud is a fairly touristy place, but to be honest, that doesn't bother me at all.  It is busy but I expect good pizza places to be busy.  I've never had to wait that long and it is a nice enough place.  They have good food besides pizza - very good fries and something called vanilla ketchup - which seemed to just be ketchup but am not sure.  Also good bruschetta.  Their drinks menu is pretty lacking however.  They do have interesting craft beers that people seem to like, and to be fair, their name is Bir = beer and fud = food, but they don't have any other options other than tap water.  I do appreciate that they don't charge for the water which comes in a nice bottle and is just as good as bottled water.  But is is nice to have a coke or something else if you want something other than beer and water.  Great pizza's and the ceiling has foam on it so although it is a small place it doesn't get too loud.  Nice touch.

Eggplant, basil, buffalo Mozzarella, and mushrooms.
I'm not a fan of eggplant at the best of times so take my review with a grain of salt but I don't like "googley" things like mushy eggplant.  So although the rest of the pizza was pretty amazing, the eggplant was a bit overpowering and the texture wasn't great.  A little less eggplant, and smaller pieces would have gone a long way.
